Why Join A Community Garden?

Fresh, organic food, flowers and a stunning array of butterflies, birds and life...

Our block sizes are decreasing, along with our green spaces and opportunities to get out in nature.

This can have an impact on our physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Community gardens provide modern suburbia with a healthy and holistic option that allows us to put good food on the table while reducing the grocery bill. Community gardening is also a proven method of reducing stress, anxiety and depression in adults and children, while also providing children with great sensory opportunities and a way to get their hands dirty.

It is a fantastic way to get to know your neighbours and the greater community.
As many friendships grow here as vegetables!

The Community Gardening Movement

Since the 70’s the idea of community gardens has grown and continues to grow in popularity around the globe.

They have become recognised as an innovative way to produce food, improve our health and wellbeing, and return greenery to concrete jungles.

It is not only the nutritional and physical health benefits that have seen a resurgence in the popularity of community gardening. Recently “green therapy” and the use of gardening to combat depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns is proving to be an effective tool in helping people of all ages cope with the pressure of our fast-paced lives.

Gardening may be the primary function of these social hubs, but a wide array of activities and events happen within them, along with the sharing of food, recipes, and community achievement.

Noticeably, as the cost of living continues to climb, community gardening has also become a favourite alternative for many as it reconnects us with more sustainable ways of living. Reconnecting us with practices on waste minimisation, water usage and composting.

The Byford Community Garden relies upon volunteers from the community, sponsors and donations

To thank the community for the generous donations that keep the garden growing, we say thank you by providing access to produce from the garden, honey from our beehive, eggs from our hens and garlic we grow. A gold coin donation is all it takes to help reduce your weekly grocery bill.

Our sponsors are vitally important to our ability to develop, maintain and produce. We’d like to thank;

Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale
Mundijong Garden Supplies
Mini muscle Dingo hire
Priceline Pharmacy, Byford
IGA Lakeside Glades, Byford
Skip Hire WA
Bendigo Bank, Byford

And thank you to all of our wonderful members!
