Found in 2017 in its current iteration as the Byford The Glades Community Garden, the membership has worked hard to make this little patch not just a thriving patch for the crops grown but for the community who have grown with it.
Community and what that means has been at the core of everything the garden has done, right now to the new layout of plots and the equipment that it purchases. As more families have gotten involved and bring their children down the garden has ensured that the little ones are able to assist with their very own child sized tools and wheelbarrows.
For many there is no greater way to pass a Saturday morning when the garden is open to the public than by enjoying a tea or coffee, delicious home-made food with ingredients sourced from the garden and enjoying the conversation while working side by side.
The management committee of the garden work tirelessly to make this a peaceful, beautiful place for the members, for the larger community but are also very mindful of the immediate community – the residential homes that surround the garden. And that relationship has translated into the wonderful immediate community keeping their eye out on the garden when members are not present.
The Byford Community Garden may be a home away from home, it is home to a thriving beehive, some adorable fluffy hens, a worm colony who assist with the green waste and food scraps, as well as the native wildlife, birds, insects etc., who find themselves from time to time drawn into the garden.
To provide the opportunity for a fair food system and access to healthy food by ensuring access to garden space and by educating budding to seasoned gardeners of all ages.
To provide the community with a place where people of all abilities, ages and backgrounds can build friendships and promote health, mental health, wellbeing and sustainable living.
The Community Garden is a delightfully small but vibrant hub of social connection and delicious food. Located on Mead Street, right next to Percy’s Park with its playgrounds and BBQ facilities, there really is something in the Byford Community Garden for everyone.
